Dive Brief:
- A fire blazed across a construction site in Aurora, Colorado, early Thursday morning, destroying five units of a multifamily project, Aurora Fire Rescue posted on social media. No one was injured, according to officials.
- Twenty-three AFR units responded to the site, which the agency said was “a very volatile, highly dangerous scene.” Crews put a hose line on nearby propane tanks that were outgassing to prevent explosion, the post said.
- Given that the area is a new building construction site, fire hydrants were limited, making it difficult to get water to the area, fire officials said. Access was narrow as well, as crews had to work around construction equipment. Crews fought the fire from the E-470 Interstate to the east, and the west and north sides of the jobsite.
Dive Insight:
Although the fire department did not provide details about the property, it gave the address of the blaze in the 7300 block of South Addison Court, the location of the Alta Addison apartment development under construction since January from developer Wood Partners.
The Atlanta-based firm’s press release from earlier this year said the property was set to open in early 2024 with 186 apartment units featuring high-end finishes and a variety of amenities including a resort-style pool.
The Colorado Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will provide heavy equipment, helpful to investigators for digging out debris and determining the cause of the fire, AFR posted.
Neither the fire department nor Wood Partners responded to Construction Dive’s request for comment by the time of publication.
