Algoma Metal has tapped Mississauga, Canada-based EllisDon as building supervisor for its electrical arc furnace mission, the producer introduced in a press launch final week.
The mission originated in 2021, when Algoma Metal’s board of administrators authorised two new EAFs to exchange its present blast furnace and oxygen metal making operation. The brand new facility is designed to scale back Algoma’s carbon emissions by 70%. When completed, the constructing in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario — close to the Michigan border — will produce 3.7 million tons of uncooked metal yearly, up from 2.8 million.
“Our transformative electrical arc furnace mission continues to advance on time and on price range, and as we enter the extra advanced phases of building, we’re happy to accomplice with EllisDon to handle our mission with optimum performance and effectiveness,” Mcihael Garcia, CEO of Algoma mentioned within the announcement.
Garcia added he expects a start-up of the furnace in mid-2024.
