Dive Brief:

  • After parting ways with Barton Malow in late 2023, the University of South Florida has selected a new construction management team for its $340 million football stadium, according to an April 9 press release.
  • USF announced it had picked the new group — composed of Manhattan Construction Company, H.J. Russell & Company and DuCon — after a competitive bid process. The companies have previously partnered on over $1.2 billion in work with project architect Populous, based in Kansas City, Missouri.
  • Previous work from the management crew includes football stadiums for the Dallas Cowboys, Texas A&M University and Texas Tech, as well as ongoing renovations at Florida State University. Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Manhattan also managed enhancement to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ stadium in 2016.

Dive Insight:

At a Dec. 5, 2023 board of trustees meeting, USF pushed the project’s completion goal one year to the fall of 2027, citing supply chain issues. At that time, the stadium also shifted from a design-build delivery method to a construction-manager-at-risk arrangement. As a result, Southfield, Michigan-based Barton Malow dropped out.

“Barton Malow understands the owner’s decision, as it provides USF with the opportunity to control both the design and the budget directly without any intermediary,” Larry Arndt, vice president of the company’s South region, told Construction Dive at the time.

The university expects to break ground on the project in the fall.

“After conducting a thorough review of each proposal we received for the project, we’re excited to get started on our partnership with a team that brings a proven track record of success,” said USF Vice President of Athletics Michael Kelly and USF Foundation CEO Jay Stroman in a joint statement.

The final stadium will include:

  • An east-west build to help maximize shade for daytime events.
  • A dedicated student section.
  • An open concourse around the majority of the venue, providing views of the field from the concession and restroom areas.
  • A large tailgating space north of the stadium.
  • Premium seats, suites, boxes and club areas.
